December/January Archive...

Monday 3rd December 2007

A good turn out by members today and for a change the weather conditions favoured the early starters. Just as the early starters finished their round of golf it started to rain, this was a bit much for quite a few members who decided to call it a day and walk in. So today's winner was Sandy Thorburn, with 35 points, Jim Cruddas was runner up with 33 points.

Thursday 6th December 2007

Not a good day, the weather was the winner but as it turned out the weather was not a bad as expected. Never the less the light rain at the start and the forecast was more than enough to cost quite a few cancellation. As always there were a few hardy souls and of those that did venture out, the weather was relatively kind to them. David McCulloch was today's winner. George Dunning was the runner up.

Monday 10th December 2007

An excellent turn out. 39 members played in a cool crisp bright sunny day and considering we are virtually playing the full course on reduced handicaps there were some very good scores returned. Tom Skead and Alan Nixon, both with 37 points were the main contenders for first place with Tom taking his second win of the winter season on a count-back. Tom's win takes him to second place in the Snowball table.

Important information, be aware!!!!

CONFORMING - NON CONFORMING DRIVERS

Appendix II, 5a of the Rules of Golf states that, "The material and construction of, or any treatment to, the face or the club head shall not have the effect at impact of a spring (test on file), or impart significantly more spin to the ball than a standard steel face, or have any other effect which would unduly influence the movement of the ball".

From 1 January 2008, a Rule of Golf will be introduced limiting the 'spring-like' effect of driving clubs for all golfers of all ability. The introduction of this Rule was announced in August 2002 and it has been applied at the elite level, via a Condition of Competition, since 1 January 2003.

This 'new' Rule will affect the conformance status of some drivers currently in the marketplace and in players' bags. Golfers are, therefore, encouraged to check their own driver, and any driver they may buy in the future, in preparation for 2008.

To help provide correct information on driver head conformance, two Lists have been compiled and published:

To view or search the List of Conforming Driver Heads, please click on the link below. All of the clubs on this List have been ruled to conform to the Rules of Golf and they will continue to conform after 1 January 2008.

Monday 17th December 2007

Another bright cold crisp day, if fact freezing conditions. Today was the Mallards 'Christmas Cracker' a stableford competition followed by Christmas Lunch. 40 members played in the competition with an additional 4 making 44 sitting down to an excellent Christmas Lunch in the club house. With the freezing conditions the course was set up with winter greens and the shorter course was reflected in the high scores returned. Interesting that  in previous weeks 36 points was a good score, today it was not good enough to make the top 10. being the Christmas Cracker, there were numerous prizes made up of bottles, chocolates and biscuits. With an excellent 44 points, Roger Rees was today's big winner, David McCulloch was runner up 43 points

Thursday 20th December 2007

Bright cold and crisp again, the ground hard and a lot of fun bounce but that did not seem to deter a few players who returned scores in the 40 plus points. All credit to the golfers who played the conditions well. Jim Samuel with 44 points took top spot, Ray Arthurs was runner up. Alan Best had initially been declared the winner but had not realised his handicap had been cut following Monday's competition, so third place it was.

Monday 24th December 2007, Christmas Eve

A very wet morning, well it was first thing. Quite a number of  members did turn up at the clubhouse, ever hopeful of playing  but then drifted of home again. A few did stay for a chat and a cuppa before drifting of but two did go and play 9 holes, well having  made the effort to go to the club it was the least they could do and as it turned out it stopped raining as they set of, oh the two that did play, David Hoggard and Sandy Thorburn, well worth the effort.

Thursday 27th December 2007

Today's planned 3 club competition was cancelled due to the weather. Quite a few members did turn up at the clubhouse and thought there was no competition a few members did go out and play.

Monday 31st December 2007

The last golf of 2007 and for those members that did turn out and play an excellent morning weather wise. The promised rain did not materialise. With the course back to virtually it's full length scoring was not easy. Never the less a pleasant morning for all. Joe Hardon with 33 points and Robert Waite with 32 points took the honours today.

Thursday 3rd January 2008

First of all Happy New to you All. Well they do say winter golf is fun golf, it certainly was fun today. Heavy snow showers causing the fairways and greens to be covered in snow making it difficult to find a ball on the fairway then on the green difficult to put, but for all that there was surprising so good scores returned. Roger Rees, with an excellent 40 points was today's winner followed by 3 members with 36 points. Sandy Thorburn taking second place from Allan Benson and Robert Waite.

Monday 7th January 2008

A much better day than the weathermen forecast. A pleasant day out for the golfers. Some varied scoring today, a real mixture, Jim Cruddas with a fine 42 points was today's winner, John Ross with 39 points took the runners up spot on a card play off from David Dalglish. A few handicaps 'cut'!

Monday 14th January 2008

No golf last Thursday due to rain, it did rain again today , but just showers so we managed to get a full round of golf. Today the members played a team event, a Yellowball Stableford. Playing the shorter winter course there were some good scores but most found putting on the winter greens a little difficult. With an excellent score of 84 points the team of Francis Fitzpatrick, Jim Lyndon & David Blackett were today's winners, Tom Skead, Duncan Allison & Eddie Robson were runners up with 82 points. Peter Shakespeare, John Ross & Ken Clark and Jim Samuel, George Dunning & Mike Dunham were 3rd and 4th respectively with 80 and 79 points.

Thursday 24th January 2008.

An extremely windy day and cold with it. The heavy rains at the beginning of the week made the golf course extremely wet, so much so that part of the course was not fit to play. The result being that today's 3 club competition was reduced to 9 holes, the members playing the back 9 only. With just the use of 3 clubs there were some good scores returned for the 9 holes. Ian Melrose and Gordon White both had 19 points, Ian being declared the winner on a card playoff. Brian Norgrove was 3rd.

Monday 28th January 2008

At last a decent day for golf, not an easy day for scoring as we played a mixture of summer and winter greens. the summer greens being very difficult to putt on. With 36 points being returned as the best scores of the day we had a 3 way tie, Tom Gordon taking first place on a card play off from Malcolm Mackenzie and Rob Woodland.

Thursday 31st January 2008

A few hardy souls ventured out today to play their winter league matches. Fortunately, apart from 10 minutes of lashing rain, hail and snow it wasn't too bad an afternoon. Michael Cross & Ray Arthurs with their 4th win have jumped to the top the table
